24 Hour Concrete Deep Soil Mixing

In order to expedite construction and take advantage of the dry season, crews will be conducting concrete deep soil mixing (CDSM) near the Main Post 24 hours a day beginning the week of July 8.

CDSM is a construction method being used to stabilize soil beneath the future roadway and Main Post Tunnels. The equipment penetrates the ground surface and combines cement and water, digging up to 60 feet into the ground. The result is a soil/cement mixture that creates a grid of improved, stable soil to prevent settlement or liquefaction during a seismic event.

This work is expected to continue 24 hours a day for several months. Additional activities that may require extended work hours include tunnel excavation, concrete pours, and continuous drilling.

Night Work for Hook Ramp Construction Begins Tonight, April 11
Night work will begin tonight for hook ramp construction. The two shifts are expected to occur from 7 am – 1 am the next morning. The work schedule will be analyzed daily and night work will be avoided whenever possible.

In answer to some concerns raised by residents, we’d like to provide further clarification about the construction schedule for the hook ramp.  As construction began on the new the hook ramp in late 2010, the project encountered schedule delays primarily due to two factors: the presence of unknown utility lines and high groundwater conditions. Groundwater and surface runoff continued flowing during the month of March, causing the ground to be too saturated to allow work to begin until now.

To meet upcoming critical path milestones, it is necessary to expand the work schedule. However, we will do everything possible to mitigate impacts to residents during this time. We are working very closely with the contractor to minimize noise that may affect residents. Trucking, deliveries and back-up alarms will be minimized during night shifts. Concrete pours using large pump trucks will be scheduled during day shifts. The contractor's noise monitoring will continue in this area, and we will coordinate with Trust staff who will also be taking noise readings during this time.

To minimize impacts to nearby residents, noisier work activities will be scheduled during the day shifts.  In the event the sequencing of work would cause noisier work activities to occur at night, this work would be postponed and rescheduled to the next day shift. Saturday work shifts would be used to make up for lost night shifts.

Please check this page for updates on the night work schedule.

We appreciate your patience as we work to complete this critical portion of the project.

Night Work Update through July
Due to careful planning and off-peak lane closures, construction crews have been able to avoid the majority of previously planned night work and limit construction impacts to nearby residents.

There are still certain activities that may occur during nighttime hours in the coming weeks. As a reminder, night work is necessary when construction requires a highway lane closure that would cause region-wide traffic impacts or if the work activity is continuous and cannot be stopped, such as a concrete pour.

Upcoming night work includes:

Grading & Paving Adjacent to Northbound Highway 101 through Mid-July

The night work planned from June 14 through June 28 did not occur, as crews were able to conduct the work between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

However, intermittent night work may be necessary in this area over the next few weeks to prepare for a northbound traffic shift on Hwy 101 scheduled for mid-July.

Bridge Foundation & Column Work through July

Intermittent night work will continue in the Cavalry Stables area through July to finish bridge foundations and columns. There will be intermittent noise associated with machinery and generators. Lights will be directed away from homes.

As construction progresses, many activities must occur outside of regular working hours. Regular working hours are Monday to Friday from 7 am to 7 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm.

Work may occur outside of regular hours when:

- there is continuous work that cannot be stopped, such as a concrete pour
- there is critical path work that would have significant schedule implications
