24 Hour Concrete Deep Soil Mixing

In order to expedite construction and take advantage of the dry season, crews will be conducting concrete deep soil mixing (CDSM) near the Main Post 24 hours a day beginning the week of July 8.
CDSM is a construction method being used to stabilize soil beneath the future roadway and Main Post Tunnels. The equipment penetrates the ground surface and combines cement and water, digging up to 60 feet into the ground. The result is a soil/cement mixture that creates a grid of improved, stable soil to prevent settlement or liquefaction during a seismic event.
This work is expected to continue 24 hours a day for several months. Additional activities that may require extended work hours include tunnel excavation, concrete pours, and continuous drilling.

Moveable Median Barrier Improves Safety on Doyle Drive
The new median on the temporary bypass greatly improves traffic safety through the Doyle Drive corridor. The barrier system employs high-density concrete to form a median strong enough to prevent head-on collisions across the bi-directional roadway!

The barrier system is also specially designed to handle changes in traffic from the daily commute, adjusting the five lanes of traffic based on demand. Each weekday at 5 a.m. a barrier transfer machine, known as a zipper truck, adjusts the roadway to provide three southbound lanes for morning commuters. The zipper truck travels across the roadway again at noon, providing three northbound lanes for the evening commute.

Crews Finish First Concrete Pour for New Southbound Bridge
On Wednesday, January 19 the first approximately 1500 cubic yards of concrete were poured for the western section of the Presidio Viaduct! This concrete will cure (solidify and harden) over nearly two million pounds (1000 tons) of steel to form the superstructure (stem and soffit) of the bridge to support the bridge deck (driving surface).  The concrete for the eastern superstructure is expected to be poured on January 25. Crews will then be ready to place formwork and steel for the bridge deck.

Additionally, crews are nearly finished installing 256 steel fins on the new bridge, each fin weighing nearly 3,000 pounds. These fins are a structural feature as well as an important design aesthetic and will eventually be painted International Orange to reflect the nearby Golden Gate Bridge.
