For Immediate Release
SAN FRANCISCO - Caltrans has scheduled nightly lane closures on northbound Doyle Drive to remove sections of the adjacent bridge sidewalk beginning this coming Monday night, April 16, 2012. The work is needed to prepare for the April 27th weekend closure, when crews will demolish the existing bridge structures and transfer traffic onto a seismically-safe temporary bypass.
The right-hand northbound lane will be subject to closure from 8:00 p.m. until noon weekdays and from 9:00 p.m. until noon weekends from April 16th until April 27th. Traffic using 19th Avenue/ Highway 1 to the Golden Gate Bridge will not be affected. Delays are expected and motorists are advised to avoid northbound Doyle Drive during the lane closure. Use 511.org for current traffic information and to plan travel.
During the sidewalk removal crews will also remove two 2-inch diameter abandoned asbestos cement pipes embedded in the bridge sidewalk. Although the presence of the asbestos pipe does not pose a risk to the traveling public, the removal does require special handling. The nightly lane closures are necessary to facilitate the removal of the pipe.
The operation is expected to create a certain amount of noise. Caltrans and the contractor will do all they can to keep the noise within reasonable limits.
ALL WORK IS WEATHER DEPENDENT and dates/times may change.
